Calculate how much primer you need
New surfaces: Always prime new drywall, bare wood, or concrete.
Color change: Prime when making a major color change, especially to/from dark colors.
Stain blocking: Use stain-blocking primer over water stains, smoke damage, or knotty wood.
Glossy surfaces: Always prime glossy finishes before painting.
